2009-2010 Student Dress Code


Dress Code


* As a Christian school, it is our belief that appropriate dress is a necessary component in the development of dignity and self-discipline. Therefore, parents, teachers, staff and students are urged to observe a modest manner conducive to a serious learning environment.
* In general, it is expected that students and their clothing be clean and neat in appearance. General good grooming and health habits are to be followed. Hair should be neat and clean and of a natural color. Sloppy, oversized, ripped or torn clothing will not be accepted.
* Preschool and Kindergarten students need not adhere to the dress code except as noted for Kindergartners under the Chapel section below.

DAILY DRESS (minor Wednesday changes noted below)


* Pants - Boys and Girls
* The following pants styles can be worn in the solid colors of navy blue and tan/khaki:
* Twill/cotton (business casual or "Dockers" style)
* Corduroy (in the winter for warmth)
* Shorts or Capri pants may be worn in the "summer," which we define as August through October 15, and May 1 until the end of school. No jeans, baggy pants, cargo pants, sweat or flannel pants allowed, including ILS flannel wear.

Skirts/Dresses/Jumpers

Girls may wear solid-colored navy-blue or tan/khaki and navy/gold or navy/white plaid skirts, skorts or jumpers. It is suggested that shorts, tights or stockings be worn under skirts and jumpers. The length of shorts or skorts must be mid-thigh or longer. No long skirts with slits may be worn. (Note: French Toast is discontinuing the navy/gold plaid.)

Shirts/Tops
Types allowed:

* Oxford-type dress shirts in the following solid colors:
* White, Light Blue, Navy/Dark Blue
* Collared polo-style shirts, long or short sleeve, in the solid colors listed above
* Solid-color (listed above) turtlenecks allowed in cool weather
* Girls' blouses as noted on the French Toast Web site
(www.frenchtoast.com)
* Navy-blue or white polo shirts with the ILS logo are acceptable and may be ordered in the fall.

Shirt/Top Regulations

* Shirts must be tucked into pants or skirts.
* Tops must have sleeves.
* No bare-midriff shirts/tops
* No tops without collars

Sweaters/Sweatshirts

* Solid-color navy-blue sweaters may be worn in the following styles: v-neck, cardigan, vest, crewneck or fleece vests.
* Only Immanuel Lutheran sweatshirts allowed. These may be ordered in the fall
* Shoes Sneakers, loafers and dress shoes are allowed. For safety reasons:
* Shoes must have a back or a back strap.
* Platform shoes are not allowed.
* Heels must be limited to one inch.
* During the winter months when boots are worn, children must change into shoes when in the classrooms.


Chapel Day (Wednesday)

Wednesday is Chapel dress-up day. Boys must wear a solid or patterned tie. Boys may not wear polo shirts or turtlenecks on Chapel Day. In the summer, as defined above, boys may wear dress-type shorts.

Although skirts and jumpers are preferred, girls may wear pants or skorts to Chapel. Girls may not wear shorts or capris to Chapel. For both boys and girls, sneakers may not be worn to Chapel. In certain circumstances, students will be allowed to change back to sneakers after Chapel.

Exceptions to the Dress Code:

* This code does not apply to Preschool.
* Physical Education Dress:
In order to provide the maximum amount of PE time, children in grades 4- 8 come to school dressed in their PE clothes on the days that they have gym.
Students will change into their uniform dress after their PE class. A gym uniform code has been instituted for all students who are required to change for PE.

T-shirts and/or sweatshirts with the ILS logos on them (these can be purchased through the school office).
Solid Navy Blue Shorts and/or sweatpants. (Shorts and sweat- pants with the ILS logo on them will be available for purchase, but will not be required.)
Sneakers are required for ALL CHILDREN during gym class.

Keep in mind that the children go outside even when the weather is cool.
Shoes:
Sneakers, dress shoes (brown, navy or black in solid colors) or loafers are allowed.
For safety reasons:

Shoes must have a back or a back strap
Platform shoes are not allowed
Heels must be limited to one-inch
During the winter months when boots are worn, children must change into shoes when in the classrooms.



Helpful Information
Many local retailers stock inexpensive clothing that meets the Immanuel Lutheran Dress Code, including Sears, J.C. Penney, Kohl's, Burlington Coat Factory and Target. In addition, you may purchase school clothes from French Toast or Lands' End.

If you are purchasing from the French Toast Web site, you will find a Web page tailored specifically to our dress code. Go to
www.frenchtoast.com and click on "Find Your School's Dress Code" in the top right corner. Then enter source code QS49P6. This source code can also be used with the French Toast catalog. When you place an order with French Toast and enter our school's source code, French Toast will return 5 percent of the sale to Immanuel Lutheran School.

When you order school clothes from the Lands' End School Uniform Catalog
(www.landsend.com), the company will return 3 percent of the order price to the school. Please use our Lands' End Preferred School code when ordering: 9000-4115-3.

Dress Code Violations

* First Offense - Student will receive a dress code violation card which must be signed by a parent.
* Second and Third Offense - Student will receive a dress code violation card which must be signed by a parent. Student will not be permitted to participate in the upcoming casual dress day.
* Fourth Offense or More - Student will receive a dress code violation card which must be signed by a parent. Student will not be permitted to participate in the upcoming casual dress day. Student will receive a 1/2 point demerit.


In extreme situations, the parent may be called to pick up the student immediately or the student may be kept out of the classroom for the day.

Casual Dress Days

Students will be given casual dress days at the principal's discretion. While the dress code is not required on these days, certain guidelines remain for casual dress that must be followed:

* No offensive logos or writing are allowed on clothing.
* No long skirts (they are dangerous on stairways).
* No ripped or torn clothing may be worn.
* No bare-midriff shirts/tops
* No halter tops, spaghetti-strap tops or tank tops may be worn.
* Shorts/skorts/skirts must be mid-thigh or longer.
